Mary Jolley

July 19, 2012

At times like these, when the thermometer is creeping up past 95 degrees Fahrenheit, I want something cool and refreshing. What could be better than sitting in the shade of the backyard sipping on one of these icy, flavorful, and healthy summer sippers? Trade in your sugary, vitamin-deficient, store-bought beverages for these naturally sweetened treats. They’re easy to make, and since they’re nourishing and hydrating, you can feel good about anyone in your family coming back for seconds.

It’s best if you have a good strong blender, like a VitaMix, but any blender should work just fine.

Cucumber Melon Colada
• 2 heaping cups of watermelon
• 12 oz frozen strawberries
• 1 small cucumber sliced (should make about ½ cup)
• 4 large, fresh basil leaves

Blend all ingredients well. Serve immediately. Makes about 3 cups.

Piña Colada
• 2 ripe bananas
• 2 cups frozen pineapple
• 1/2 cup coconut milk (This comes in a can and looks like this . Make sure to stir it before measuring it out. I also like to put it in the fridge several hours before so it’s nice and cold when you add it.)
• 1/3 cup pure Grade B maple syrup (You can substitute with Grade A.)

Blend all ingredients well. Serve immediately. Makes about 3 cups.
