You know those friends that know exactly what you need, when you need it? How they come in and save you right when you needed them most? I have those friends too. They should make a superhero movie about those people.

When you think about what those friends did, it wasn’t anything grand or spectacular. They just took an ordinary moment, and they let you know that they cared.

I’ve been through some hard things in the past 3 years. I’ve been through heartache and pain, recovering from a surgical accident that left my foot and ankle paralyzed.  As I’ve been searching my way through this whirlwind of the past few years, my friends and family have been what have kept me going.

As a woman, I tend to be on the giving side of things. I feel selfish if I accept gifts, charity or even a compliment.  But the kindness of others is what has blessed me the most. I never knew how powerful actions could be until I was the one receiving them. The little notes that people would send me, telling me they were praying for me or the random visit from a friend made the biggest difference in the world. I know because of those small things, I was able to recover and manage my disability more than the doctors ever expected.

So, as a thank you to all of our past superheroes, and as a reminder to accept help in the future, here are some ideas that I have about what we can do for others.

It’s a simple idea, but one of the greatest things you can do is make a handmade note. I don’t know why, but receiving a handmade note is just about the greatest thing since sliced bread. Phone calls are fabulous, texts are happy reminders, but a note, a handmade note, from a friend can make a hard trial seem bearable.
Another thing I like to do is give them something the person already loves. A favorite candy bar, fresh flowers, a new package of post-its.  It could be anything. When we take the time to personalize what we give, it just makes it that much better for the person receiving our kind thought.

One of the biggest things you can do is to give someone your time.

It may seem like an obvious thing, but it tends to be harder than expected.  I have this friend. Let’s call her Elise, well, because that’s her real name. And she always gives her time to me. I know that if I need to vent, or cry, or laugh, that she is always there.  After she takes the time out of her busy life, I sit and wonder if I’m doing the same for her and my other friends and family. Am I freely giving my time to those I love? To those who need me?

Life is full of struggles and pain, but that’s why we have each other. We are here to help one another. There is so much good in the world, if you will just look for it.

Don’t be afraid to be someone’s superhero, because one day, you may need one.
